Are you passionate about making a difference through legislative advocacy? The Institute for Justice is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Legislative and Outreach Coordinator to support our Legislative Team. This role offers a unique opportunity to blend grassroots advocacy with policy strategy in support of IJ’s mission to protect civil liberties. Working from our headquarters in Arlington, VA, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping and executing legislative strategies, tracking important bills, and ensuring seamless internal operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Drive grassroots advocacy campaigns by identifying and engaging impacted individuals, activists, and coalition partners
  • Draft persuasive materials for legislators, the public, and media, including one-pagers, press releases, and social content
  • Track and manage IJ-sponsored and related legislation using government affairs software like Quorum
  • Coordinate legislative testimony, materials, and logistics for hearings and meetings
  • Provide administrative support to the Legislation team, including scheduling, document management, and internal coordination
  • Plan and execute logistics for legislative events, conferences, and awareness-building webinars
  • Represent IJ at conferences and legislative events, occasionally traveling and working outside of standard hours
  • Maintain legislative web pages and internal systems to ensure accuracy and accessibility of resources
Qualifications:
  • Extraordinary attention-to-detail and organizational skills
  • Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative when appropriate
  • Excellent communication skills with maturity to navigate politically sensitive situations
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • Passion for advancing liberty and IJ’s legislative goals
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1+ year of relevant experience (legislative, outreach, or advocacy work)
  • Familiarity with Quorum, WordPress, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms
  • Experience with lobbying, government affairs, or state legislative processes
Additional Details:
  • Some travel and weekend work required during legislative sessions (Jan–May)
  • Occasional travel for events and conferences (Jun–Dec)
  • This position is on-site at IJ headquarters in Arlington, VA. After the initial training period, when work allows, there is flexibility for 2 remote days per week
