Operations and Community Relations Coordinator

The Institute for Justice Clinic on Entrepreneurship (IJ Clinic) at the University of Chicago Law School seeks a bright and dedicated person to join our team as an Operations and Community Relations Coordinator. Part of the Institute for Justice, the national law firm for liberty, the IJ Clinic supports low-income entrepreneurs in Chicago by providing legal counsel for them, advocating for legal reforms so that entrepreneurs have the freedom to pursue their dreams, and presenting events and resources that enable and showcase entrepreneurs’ inspiring stories.

The Operations and Community Relations Coordinator is a key member of the IJ Clinic’s dynamic four-person team and is chiefly responsible for building the IJ Clinic’s reputation and presence in the community.  The IJ Clinic team works within a large national nonprofit with deep expertise in strategic research, communications, project management, and more.  The ideal candidate is passionate about community outreach, grassroots organizing, programs for entrepreneurs, and building efficient administrative systems that make our programming and operations effective.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Outreach, Community Relations, Legislative Advocacy

  • Develop, plan, and execute the IJ Clinic’s events to meet the needs of entrepreneurs, such as South Side Pitch, workshops providing crucial information for small business owners, and round table discussions about low-income entrepreneurs’ challenges.  Event responsibilities include designing content, budgeting, lining up speakers, arranging venues, catering, and technology, building an audience, etc.
  • Lead grassroots organizing and communications for legislative campaigns, so that lawmakers hear from the community members who are impacted the most by legislation.
  • Cultivate strategic relationships with community organizations and local leaders. Represent the IJ Clinic and its message in Chicago’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • Craft the IJ Clinic’s communications to further our mission of knocking down barriers for entrepreneurs, including email newsletters, calls to action, the website, and social media.
  • Strategically position the IJ Clinic to learn about regulatory challenges faced by small businesses in Chicago and innovate initiatives to tackle those challenges.


  • Provide administrative support for the IJ Clinic’s activities and team members.
  • Oversee annual budget planning and ensure effective budget management. Input monthly expense reports and process vendor invoices.
  • Participate in strategic planning to increase IJ Clinic’s impact on a greater number of entrepreneurs.
  • Oversee processes and systems so that IJ Clinic’s team members can execute their jobs effectively.
    • Manage work plans and timelines, coordinate schedules, and lead regular team meetings.
    • Spearhead continuous improvement of systems, operations, task management, and information technology maintenance.
    • Monitor supplies and office spaces to maximize productivity and morale.
  • Build and maintain clinic contacts and databases for impactful electronic and printed outreach.
  • Manage processes of outreach, screening, and selection of new clients.
  • See that UChicago Law School procedures are observed for law students participating in the IJ Clinic, including onboarding students and tracking hours required for granting academic credit.
  • Monitor and confirm the IJ Clinic is meeting all grant deliverables on time.  Assist IJ Development team with capturing the accomplishments of the IJ Clinic in qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1 - 2 years of professional experience either through internships or full-time work. 
  • Persistence executing across a diverse range of workstreams and prioritizing among them. 
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and manage tasks independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Comfort with and interest in working with diverse communities.
  • Passion for entrepreneurship, small businesses, and community development in Chicago neighborhoods.
  • Strong communication, writing, and proofing skills.
  • Familiarity with social media (Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn) and competency with Microsoft Word are necessary.
  • Experience with event management, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Monday.com, Salesforce, HubSpot or WordPress is a plus.
